Over 100 of the Best, Free, Online, Educational Games

Posted by Erica Warren on

Many parents and teachers are cautious about allowing computer time, and for good reason. Too many children become hooked on fast-paced, mindless games that encourage the very behaviors we work hard to reduce in learning environments, such as impulsivity, guessing, and instant gratification. These types of digital games provide quick hits of stimulation without building attention, persistence, problem-solving, or thoughtful reflection. Over time, this can negatively impact a child’s ability to focus, tolerate frustration, or engage in deeper learning.

However, technology itself is not the enemy. When used intentionally, educational technology can do the opposite: it can strengthen cognitive skills, improve executive functioning, provide targeted practice, and make learning interactive and enjoyable. The key is choosing digital tools and computer games that support mindful thinking, build attention and working memory, and reinforce the behaviors we want to see in the classroom and at home.

My Favorite Free Games

Over the past decade, I have created descriptions and links to some of my favorite games for my students.  I keep them on my private practice's website, Learning to Learn.  Here, my students can find direct links to free online resources.

The Games Are Organized Under Headings

In addition, I have organized them under the following categories: Cognitive Games, General Education Games, Writing and Language Games, Social Studies Games, Science Games, Spelling Games, Reading Games, Digital Storytelling, Math Games, Grammar Games, Typing Games, Social Skills, and Sequencing. In an effort to "spread the word," I'm providing a link to my page so others can benefit from these beneficial games too.

To view all these games, CLICK HERE. If you know of other free games that improve cognition or learning, please leave them in the comments below. I will be sure to check them out and add them to this growing resource.
