Compound Word Game Develops Critical Reasoning, Mental Flexibility and Sequencing Skills

Posted by Erica Warren on

Developing language processing skills, critical thinking, mental flexibility, verbal reasoning, and sequential processing abilities is foundational in any elementary education. But when lessons are fun, memorable, and motivating too, you can engage even the most discouraged learner.
Compound word games

I created Making Connections – Compound Word Games to transform compound word lessons into playful, brain-teasing puzzles that spark curiosity and capture the attention of learners of all ages. Instead of rote memorization or repetitive worksheets, students get to explore language through engaging challenges that strengthen their ability to recognize patterns and combine meaningful word parts.

Learning specialists, homeschoolers, teachers, and parents can now guide young learners through compound word practice with ease. The activities are thoughtfully designed to support emerging readers while also reinforcing cognitive skills such as visual processing, flexible thinking, and vocabulary development.

How to play the compound word puzzles

Although the games are ideal for elementary students, many of the puzzles are surprisingly challenging, which makes this resource a wonderful addition to morning warm-ups, literacy centers, small-group instruction, or even brain-break activities for older students. The versatility of these puzzles allows educators to adapt them for fun, enrichment, or targeted skill-building depending on the needs of their learners.

Making Connections brings language to life while offering a delightful way to strengthen foundational literacy skills.  I now offer a free sampling that can be delivered right to your email.
